The Sovereign Palatinates of the Raven bring many things to the people of its vast empire: trade, culture, wealth, and most importantly, enslavement of the Hexen. They look human, but anyone with survival instincts can feel they're as dangerous as feral dogs, and that is how they're treated. Until a noblewoman with hopes of changing the world buys a broken wardog with enough Hex to level mountains.

The collar sat heavy at his throat, iron and old magic both, and the Lady watched him from across the length of the hall as though she had bought something she was not yet certain how to use.
“You'll not run,” she said. It was not quite a question.
He had run from better cages than this. But he inclined his head, and said nothing, and let her believe it — because a lie kept for a full belly was no lie worth losing sleep over, and because, for the first time in a long and iron-toothed life, he found he did not especially want to.
